Tummy Tuck

Treatment Overview

A tummy tuck, also referred to as an abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to firm up the rectus muscles (often known as the ‘6-pack’ muscles) and address lax abdominal skin.

If you have worries regarding sagging or excess abdominal skin, an abdominal bulge, or a separation in your abdominal muscles, you could be a potential candidate for an abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck. It’s crucial to note that a tummy tuck is a body-contouring procedure and is not intended as a remedy for overall obesity. This surgery can be performed independently or in conjunction with other treatments like liposuction. Maintaining an active lifestyle can contribute to ongoing improvements in your physique and ensure the longevity of your results.

Tummy tucks are suitable for individuals in good overall health. If you are a smoker or have notable health issues, Mr Khoda will conduct a thorough evaluation and may recommend postponing an abdominoplasty. In certain cases, if the responsibility of ensuring your well-being deems it necessary, he might suggest abstaining from the surgery altogether. It’s important to note that various surgical methods for abdominoplasty exist, each tailored to an individual’s unique anatomy and desired aesthetic outcomes.

FAQ’s

The most prevalent type of abdominoplasty surgery is carried out while you are under general anaesthesia. It involves making a horizontal incision across the upper pubic area, extending from one hip to the other and encircling the belly button. The skin is elevated, and the underlying muscles are firmed up, with surplus and drooping skin removed and the position of the belly button adjusted. Subsequently, Mr Khoda will carefully suture the skin to achieve a more compact and refined contour.

The duration of an abdominoplasty in our Manchester clinic typically ranges from 2 to 4 hours, and this can vary depending on the extent of the surgical procedure. If it is combined with other treatments like liposuction, the total duration of the surgery will naturally be extended to accommodate these additional procedures.

Following the surgery, your incisions will be covered by protective tapes, and there will be a dressing in place over your belly button. It is generally safe to take a cautious shower after 48 hours, but it’s essential to ensure that the tape is thoroughly dried with a hairdryer using a medium setting if it becomes wet. For the next 6 weeks, you will be required to wear a supportive garment to aid in your recovery process.

Mr Khoda will recommend that you maintain a slight stoop while walking during the initial 7-14 days following the procedure. This helps prevent undue tension on the incisions and supports the healing of muscles and skin. Typically, most patients plan for a recovery period of around 3 weeks, during which any strenuous activities or heavy lifting should be abstained from for a total of 6 weeks. It’s advisable to refrain from driving until you can confidently perform an emergency stop safely.

If you have recently been pregnant or intend to expand your family in the future, Mr Khoda may suggest delaying your abdominoplasty. Likewise, if you have plans to shed excess weight or are presently overweight, it is advisable to consider postponing the procedure until weight reduction has been achieved.

While all surgical procedures carry potential risks, Mr Khoda maintains a secure and consistent approach to minimise these risks. He employs the non-touch technique to avoid direct skin contact with any part of the wound or any substances or surfaces that might come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. Common complications associated with surgery include bleeding, hematoma formation, infection, numbness, and the possibility of requiring additional surgical procedures. Furthermore, surgery entails risks like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Specific to this surgery, potential risks encompass delayed healing, infections, bleeding, the development of conspicuous scars, asymmetry, issues concerning the belly button, discomfort, altered skin sensations, irregularities in skin contours, fluid accumulation, leg and lung clot formation, and persistent puckering at the ends of the incision.

Specific risks related to this surgery include slow healing, infection, bleeding, unsightly scarring, asymmetry, problems with the belly button, pain, numbness or sensitivity in the skin, skin contour irregularities, fluid build-up, clots in the legs and lungs, and persistent puckering at the ends of the scar.
