FAQ’s

Surgical approaches vary depending on your unique anatomy and your aesthetic and medical goals, and all techniques are conducted under general anaesthesia. In his Manchester clinic, Mr Khoda offers a range of rhinoplasty procedures, including septorhinoplasty, alar base reduction, cartilage grafts, tip rhinoplasty, and revision rhinoplasty. In a closed rhinoplasty, incisions are made within your nostrils, while an open rhinoplasty involves incisions inside your nostrils and across the central column of your nose between your nostrils (columella). This allows Mr Khoda to lift the skin of your nose, providing access to the underlying bone and cartilage, which can be sculpted to achieve the desired shape and size. Typically, cartilage grafts are utilised, often sourced from within the nose itself. Finally, the skin is sutured over the newly shaped nasal structure, and a supportive splint is placed on the nose to safeguard it during the initial stages of recovery. In some cases, nasal packs may be inserted in your nostrils to aid in healing, although they are not always required.

A typical nose job takes around 1-2 hours, depending on the difficulty of the case. When rhinoplasty is combined with other procedures at the Manchester clinic, the total duration of the surgery is extended.

Following your rhinoplasty procedure in Manchester, you will be fitted with both internal and external splints for nose protection. If your surgery includes nasal packs, these will remain in place for 24-48 hours. The internal splint will be removed after a week, and the external splint will be taken off after 2 weeks. The procedure does not involve drains, and the stitches within your nostrils are absorbable. Stitches in the columella will be removed after a week. Expect to experience bruising under your eyes and on your cheeks, and you may feel congested, similar to having a head cold.

The majority of our patients allocate a 2-week recovery period for their rhinoplasty surgery in Manchester. During this time and afterwards, Mr Khoda recommends the following measures:

  • Use Sterimar nasal spray three times a day for 3 weeks, starting from the evening of the surgery.
  • Begin taking arnica tablets from the evening of the surgery.
  • Elevate your head with extra pillows while sleeping to help reduce swelling.
  • Tape your nose at night for 3 months. Refrain from blowing your nose for 4 weeks.
  • Minimise bending and stooping as much as possible.
  • Avoid heavy lifting for 6 weeks.
  • Abstain from even light exercise for 4 weeks.
  • Restrict moderate to more intensive exercise for 6 weeks.
  • Steer clear of contact sports for 2 months.
  • Do not resume driving until you can confidently perform an emergency stop.

If you are a smoker, currently taking blood-thinning (anti-coagulation) medication, or have substantial health issues, Mr Khoda will conduct a thorough evaluation and may recommend postponing or abstaining from rhinoplasty. It’s crucial to note that rhinoplasty may not necessarily alleviate symptoms of allergic rhinitis and sinusitis.

While all surgeries contain risks, Mr Khoda employs a safe and consistent approach to minimise potential complications. He utilises a non-touch technique, ensuring no skin contact with the surgical wound or any materials or surfaces that may come into contact with it, such as the inner surface of dressings. Common surgical complications include bleeding, hematomas, infection, numbness, and the need for additional procedures. Surgery also poses risks of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Specific to rhinoplasty, potential complications encompass infection, delayed healing, suboptimal scarring, bleeding, asymmetry, pain, skin numbness or sensitivity, CSF leak (which can lead to meningitis), damage to the skin or cartilage, breathing difficulties, septum perforation, loss of nasal structure, and loss of smell.
