Labiaplasty

Treatment overview

Large, protruding labia can cause self-consciousness and discomfort during exercise, when wearing tight clothing, and during sexual intercourse.

There are many reasons women have enlarged labia, including childbirth, aging, and genetics. An enlarged labia can lead to difficulties with exercise, hygiene, urinary tract infections, and sexual activity, as well as increasing self-consciousness when wearing yoga pants, workout pants, and swimming suits. Some women feel highly self-conscious when becoming romantically involved with their partners, if their labia is large. A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape the labia.

More commonly done for the inner labia (labia minora), labiaplasty can also be performed for the outer labia (labia majora) or both, depending on anatomy and desired patient outcome. Most patients opting for a labiaplasty have a labial reduction, though it is also possible to augment the inner labia. Labiaplasty is often performed in conjunction with other body contouring procedures such as breast uplifts, reducing downtime and expense.

FAQ’s

Different surgical approaches can be taken, depending on your individual anatomy and aesthetic and medical goals. The two most common techniques are:

  • Trimming the labia minora from the outer edge, thus reducing its size
  • Reducing and reshaping the labia in a V-shaped fashion.

The labia are reduced and reshaped, resulting in a balanced and natural appearance.

Women undertake labiaplasty for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Improve the balance and appearance of the vaginal area
  • Make exercise more comfortable
  • Improve self-confidence
  • Correct the tears or stretching that can occur during childbirth
  • Reduce the size of large labia minora
  • Correct scar contracture
  • Reduce excess fatty tissue

The procedure takes 1-2 hours, depending on the extent of surgery. If labiaplasty surgery is performed in conjunction with other procedures, surgery time will be longer.

Though it is possible to go home on the day of surgery, most patients stay in hospital for a night. Normal, light activities can be resumed the next day, but movement should be restricted to gentle activities around the home for 7 days. Typically, up to 2 weeks off work is required to allow the early stages of healing to complete, during which time most patients require nothing more than over-the-counter pain medication to manage any discomfort. Swelling is mild to moderate for the first few days, fading over the course of the first 3 weeks after surgery. All heavy lifting and intensive activity is to be avoided for 6 weeks, along with sexual intercourse. Do not drive until you can safely perform an emergency stop.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the wound, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Specific risks associated with labiaplasty include slow healing, pain, infection, bleeding, poor or unexpectedly pronounced scarring, labia asymmetry, loss of sensitivity or oversensitivity in the labia or clitoris (rare), contour irregularities, over-reduction, and under-reduction.
