Most patients take a week off work after prominent ear correction surgery. After the operation your ears will be protected and held in place by special dressings and bandages, which are to be worn for 7 days. We or a member of hospital staff will be in touch to check on the process of your recovery. After seven days you will still have some post-surgical bruising and swelling, but this will settle over the course of several weeks while the sutures behind your ears are dissolving. Mr Khoda recommends wearing a headband at night for 3 months to hold the ears in position while you sleep.

There are general risks from surgery, including bruising, bleeding, swelling, infection, complications with general anaesthetics, abnormal scarring, and keloid (ridged, prominent) scarring. Risks specific to this surgery include tenderness of the ears, numbness, pain, post-operative bleeding, a need to return to theatre, pressure from dressings and sutures on the ears, thick scarring, and loss of intended shape.

It is important to rest after surgery. Mr Khoda recommends you avoid anything but the lightest activities for several weeks and intensive activities or exercise for 6 weeks.
