Breast Asymmetry

Treatment overview

Breasts are rarely perfectly symmetrical, and though a degree of asymmetry is common, some women notice a significant difference in the size and shape of their breasts.

Breast asymmetry can be a cause of embarrassment, undermining confidence in beachwear or underwear. For this reason, many women opt to correct the symmetry of their breasts through surgery. There are two main surgical methods of doing so, the first being breast augmentation of the smaller breast, increasing its size to match the other. This can be achieved through the placement of an implant, or a saline expander can be inserted to gradually enlarge the breast over the course of a year, after which time a silicone implant takes the place of the expander for a softer, more natural texture.

Alternatively, the larger breast can be reduced in size, which involves the removal of excess breast tissue to match the size of the breasts. Asymmetry can also be addressed by augmenting both breasts using differently sized implants, leaving the patient with larger, more symmetrical breasts. All these methods result in breasts that are more similar in size, but it is important to note that breast asymmetry is a difficult problem, and that absolute perfection should not be the end goal. Mr Khoda will bring his skills to bear to improve symmetry.

FAQ’s

Whether or not to opt for breast asymmetry surgery is a personal choice. Some women are perfectly happy with their breasts, even if there is a noticeable difference in shape or size, while others feel self-conscious about such a variation and choose to address it. Mr Khoda is committed to helping patients achieve their aesthetic goals.

The method we use depends on a number of factors, including your anatomy and desired outcome. Mr Khoda will assess you carefully before making recommendations.

Some scarring is unavoidable, but Mr Khoda is reputed for minimal scars left after surgery. He will make every effort to place only the smallest incisions to minimise their visibility. The absorbable sutures used during surgery will not require removal.

Most patients leave hospital the day after surgery, returning home with a supportive, post-surgery bra to protect the incisions for the next 8 weeks.

  • Once at home, you will need someone to fetch and carry things for you for the first 24 hours.
  • Take the antibiotics and pain medication issued for you at hospital to protect the healing wounds and minimise discomfort.
  • Eat a light diet for 3-4 days before resuming your usual habits and keep yourself properly hydrated throughout recovery.
  • If you experience any complications, contact BK Aesthetics or the hospital straight away, especially if your temperature is elevated, throbbing pain or redness around the breast.
  • Return to the hospital dressing clinic for your appointment a week after surgery.
  • Apply what you learn about scar management and how to look after your post-operative breast.
  • Attend any follow-up visits, as agreed with Mr Khoda.

All surgeries can lead to complications, but Mr Khoda works in a safe and consistent manner to minimise any risks. He uses the non-touch technique, avoiding skin contact with any part of the wound or any substance or surface that will come into contact with the implant, such as the inner surface of dressings. The most common complications with surgery are bleeding, haematomas, infection, numbness, alteration in nipple sensation, and the need to return to theatre for further procedures. Surgery also presents a risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. It is important to remember perfection cannot be achieved, and some degree of asymmetry will persist after surgery.
